• Renault 8

The Renault 8 (R8 short) is a four-door sedan by the French automobile manufacturer Renault, which was prepared from mid-1962 until the summer of 1973. She had a four-cylinder inline engine, which was installed along the rear. The model had independent suspension all round and disc brakes on the front wheels.

The production of the R8 was launched in June 1962.

Already in 1963 received the R8 a new four-speed transmission in which the gears were two to four synchronized, from 1964 also the first transition.

And from 1963 an automatic transmission with electromagnetic "Jaeger" clutch was available on request. The automatic system was controlled via buttons on the dashboard, like we do with the Dauphine automatic and later with the parallel model R10. The engine is concerned the "Sierra" with a five-bearing crankshaft. The car reached 130km/h and had a 38 liter tank.

1964 Renault brought out the Renault 8 Gordini, who had a 1108cc engine with 63 kW (86hp). The R8 Gordini was usually painted blue with two extra white stripe that ran on the driver side of hood, car roof and tail. 1967 came out an over-worker model, now with additional high beams, a second tank (26l), 5-speed manual transmission and a 1254cc engine with 65 kW (88hp). With a wheelbase of 2270 mm, the vehicles were 3990 mm long, 1490 mm wide and 1410 mm high.

In the summer of 1965, the Renault 10 was followed as a larger version of the R8, the R8 version of "Major" was replaced by the R10 "Major".

Between 1969-1971 there was the Renault 8 S with a double carburetor and two additional beam headlamps. The respective luxury versions were designated R8 "Major".

The R8 was built further up to the summer of 1973 and received no direct successor.

The installation position of the engine in the rear had in connection with the rear-wheel drive several consequences:

From 1968 to 1970, the R8 was prepared as a Dacia 1100 in Romania under license. At first the vehicles were completely original in every respect, from 1969, however supply parts of Romanian production were increasingly used. A total of 26 582 Dacia 1100 were produced. The Dacia 1100 was replaced by the Dacia 1300, a license replica of the Renault 12

From 1967 to 1971, the R8 was created along with the R10 as Bulgarrenault in Bulgaria. The vehicles were mostly from French original parts but also parts of the Bulgarian production were singled installed. In the same work, the Renault Alpine A110 was assembled from original parts. The plastic bodies of the so-called Bulgaralpine sports car came from Bulgarian production. In total, about 3,500 vehicles of the types Bulgarrenault R8, R10 und Bulgarrenault hergestellt Bulgaralpine.
