• Renault 5

Renault 5 – passenger car B segment produced by French automaker Renault since 1972. There were two generations, the first was produced in the years 1972-1985 (also known as R5), while the second was created in the years 1984-1996 (the name Super 5 or Supercinq). In the United States, the vehicle was sold as Le Car (1976-1983). Throughout the period of production began nearly 5.5 million units of the 5. Renault 5 obtained, as the Mini, the status of the vehicle cult.

In a plebiscite on the European Car of the Year 1973 car took second position (for Audi 80 B1).

Renault 5 was officially presented on Dec. 10, 1971 year to production went to the beginning of 1972.

The vehicle was designed by Michel Boué, he died before the release of the model. The three-door hatchback body type was characterized by a distinctive clipped back.

From the mechanical vehicle use of the solutions used in the Renault 4 engines were mounted longitudinally in front of the body, driven front axle. The front axle suspension used torsion bars. Powertrains type OHV came from R4 and R8 models, displacement ranged from 850 to 1,289 cm ³. In later years he also used engines with a volume of 1397 cm ³.

Early examples of the model have a shift lever mounted on the dashboard, it was later replaced by a lever mounted in the floor. Since 1978, with the 1289cc engine was available automatic transmission. The share copies with the automatic transmission was approximately 5% of the total produced R5.

The vehicle’s engine was moved into the passenger compartment, for transmission. This solution allowed us to save up space for the spare wheel under the hood, and at the same time increasing the usable space inside the passenger compartment and the trunk. The interior of the passenger compartment was evaluated in comparison with other European models of the same size as "extremely spacious" (called "remarkably spacious"). Coefficient of drag body was 0.37 as against the competing models was low value (other European models had the most value around 0.45).

The vehicle has also performed as a 4-door sedan called the Renault 7, production dealt with the FASA-Renault. Since 1979 Renault 5 was also available as a 5-door hatchback. From March 1981 with automatic transmission was offered a larger and more powerful 1.4 engine offers better performance and lower fuel consumption.

Model proved to be a market success of Renault, shortly after the introduction of the sale of more than 60% of the cars sold were the French manufacturer R5.

Since 1976, the sportiest version was available 5 Alpine (Gordini in the UK). Was equipped with a 1.4 engine with a power of 93hp (63 kW) locked with a 5-speed gearbox. The exterior of the vehicle stood out rims, alloy wheels and front lights przeciwmgłowymi. Also stiffened suspension. In a test conducted by the British magazine Motor reached a top speed of 168.5km/h and acceleration 0-100km/h of 9.7 s.

In 1982, he presented the Renault 5 Alpine Turbo, a successor aspirated version of the Alpine/Gordini. The same as in the predecessor engine 1.4, added Garrett T3 turbocharger, however, by which maximum power increased to 112hp (82 kW). In a test conducted in 1982 by the editors of Motor magazine achieved a maximum speed of 179.9km/h acceleration time of 0-100km/h of 8.7 s.

Renault 5 Turbo version was distinct from Alpine/Gordini Turbo design with a centrally mounted engine driving the rear axle.

For the North American market vehicle debuted in 1976 under the name Le Car. American Motors (AMC) offered it by 1300 their showrooms, model compete on the market with such cars as the Honda Civic and Volkswagen Rabbit.

The vehicle was marketed in the United States as the best-selling car in Europe, which satisfied millions of customers. Le Car is not repeated, but such success in the U.S., even though the tests were praised for the amount of space in the cabin, comfort and fuel consumption of (100 miles) from 6,7 l and 8,4 l in the urban cycle.

The car was equipped with a 1.4 engine with a power of 55hp (41 kW). By 1980, he was offered only as a three-door hatchback 5-door joined to offer in 1981. From vintage 1980 model characterized by a refreshed band with a modernized front bumper, radiator grille and rectangular headlights dipped. Import vehicle was completed in 1983, sales in Canada came to an end in 1985.

The second generation Renault 5, often called Supercinq or Superfive, appeared on the market in 1984 (RHD version in 1985). The design of the chassis and bodywork was brand new (vehicle was based on the solutions of the Renault 9/11), was responsible for the appearance of Marcello Gandini. The car was longer and wider, with a 20% increased Glazed in area, increased the amount of space in the cabin, was reduced to 0.35 coefficient of drag. Through ago in the most economical versions of consumption per 100km at a constant speed of 90km/h was 4.1 l. The motors were mounted transversely over the front axle, unlike the first generation. Also changed the suspension structure, have used it since then McPherson struts.

At the start of the sale were offered the following versions of the equipment: TC, TL, GTL, Automatic, TS and TSE. TC Base was equipped with engine capacity of 956 cm ³ (power 42hp), TL had a bigger engine 1.1 (1108cc, 47hp). Variants of GTL, Automatic, TS and TSE were offered with 1.4 engine (1397cc with a power of 60, 68 after 72hp ). TC and TL versions were offered as standard with a 4-speed manual transmission transmission, GTL, TS and TSE while the 5-speed manual transmission (optional for TL). Since 1987, the engine was offered F2N 1.7 (versions GTX, GTE (F3N), Baccara and Monaco).

The naturally aspirated 1.7 engine with multi-point fuel injection borrowed from the Renault 9/11 was an alternative to the more powerful 1.4 Turbo. In the version of GTE it generates power 95hp (70 kW). Exterior and suspension system was the same as for the Turbo version. Variants Baccara and GTX also benefited from the engine 1.7, the first of them offered as standard include: leather interior trim, power steering, electric windows, sunroof, equipment audio, and optional air conditioning and a trip computer. GTX performed with the same equipment, the difference was leather interior trim (optional).

In the 90s the model was already outdated, the success of overwriting it with the new Clio. The production moved to R5 Revoz in Slovenia. The sale is allowed only two versions of the engine, the petrol 1.4 and 1.6 high-pressure, the model itself was offered in the depleted version of Campus until 1996, when it completed production of R5.

Sportiest version of the GT Turbo was introduced in 1985. Was driven by Cleon 1.4 ośmiozaworowy engine with turbocharger Garrett T2-generating power of 115hp (85 kW). The high power combined with the own weight of 850kg meant that the vehicle accelerates from 0 to 60mph in 7.5 s.

In 1987 he presented a refreshed version of the Phase II. Turbocharger was henceforth liquid-cooled, also a new ignition system. Maximum power increased to 120hp (88 kW). Also changed bumpers and overlay thresholds. Time acceleration 0-100km/h was 7.5 sec. In 1989 version of the GT Turbo received a new dashboard, in 1990, introduced a limited edition Raider (metallic blue paint, different interior look, new wheels). The production version of the GT Turbo was completed at the end of 1991.

In 1989, the Belgian company EBS started production version of the coupe model 5 was established about 1400 copies, most of the LHD version.

On the basis of R5 was created as a panel van, wore a name Renault Express. In some countries, was known as the Renault Extra (UK and Ireland) or Renault Rapid (German-speaking countries). Production started in 1982.
