Mitsubishi Eclipse

The Sport Coupe Mitsubishi Eclipse was by the manufacturers Mitsubishi (as "Eclipse"), Plymouth (a laser) and the Chrysler subsidiary Eagle (as Talon) jointly developed. For this purpose, the Community Company Diamond Star Motors was founded in 1985.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse was produced in 1990 for the U.S. market at its plant in Normal (Illinois).

Built by the beginning of 1990 until the autumn of 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse was available in a variety of equipment and engine variants in the United States. The simplest versions had the 1.8-liter SOHC 4G37 engine (68 kW/92hp), front wheel drive, no rear wiper and manual windows. The following engines were available:

After Germany only a special version of the GS and 1994 GS-T was imported. This had an external oil cooler, a knock sensor, a higher compression ratio (10,4:1 instead of 9:1) and more power (110 kW instead of 100 kW and 143 kW for the GS and GS-T) as the American GS. The German Eclipse there was only a single trim level: fully equipped except for the sunroof and leather interior. In addition, could the equipment packages and Top GT be ordered, which included, among others, a sport suspension by Eibach and Koni, a different rear bumper, larger 16-inch wheels, a double-pipe exhaust system and a sports steering wheel, the Momo brand. The Targa was built only about 200 times. The Targa roof is removable in two parts and the underbody was reinforced by two 1.5-mm steel plates, which makes the Targa 60kg heavier compared to the series Eclipse. The window control is adjusted so that the Lower the window when opening the door briefly and closed again after closing. Over time, almost all Targa roofs were leaking, so that an additional seal must be installed.

For Austria, there was a so-called "sucker" GSX. This combines the 150-hp engine from the GS with all-wheel gear of the GSX.

In autumn 1995, the second generation came on the market, which in the United States as a basic model (without turbo) is a different engine from Chrysler (2.0 L DOHC, engine code: D420A) had. In the GS-T and GSX remained in the U.S., the 4G63 engines (which were also installed in the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution), like its predecessor largely the same.

Only the basic model with 4G63 engine was for Germany and the EU here again (to year 1996 emission classification EUR 1 107 kW and Â€ 2 104 kW) for sale. Externally visible only by the standard dual exhaust for the older Euro-1 version.

In contrast to the previous model, there was also a "Spyder" called convertible version. This full convertible soft top was offered with both the 2.4-liter naturally aspirated 4G64 with 105 kW (143hp) and in the 2.0-liter turbo version GS-T with the 157 kW (214hp) 4G63T engine. Mitsubishi but not sold the Spyder in Europe.

In the summer of 1998, the Eclipse was given a facelift (modified bumpers, side skirts, headlights/fog lights, color of the interior and upholstery of the seats). In addition, the Contributed Bosch ABS has been revised to the 1997 very often failed in the years of construction 1995 (splash damage in the ABS hydraulic unit). With the introduction of a new ABS the front passenger footwell was deeper because the controller has this integrated into the ABS hydraulic unit.

As of spring 2000, the third generation of the sports coupe was produced. This series has been built and sold only in the United States. It was offered as a coupe and Spyder.

The base presented a 2.4-liter four-cylinder (D50) represents approximately 114 kW/154hp, which was available in the models GS and RS. The turbo version was replaced with a new V6 engine (D53a) with 152 kW/207hp (GT model).

From the spring of 2003, a further six-cylinder GTS was in addition to the GT offered. At the same time a small face lift was performed. Due to improvements of the throttle valve and the intake manifold, the power increased to 154 kW/210hp.

In Europe, this car is only available as a gray import. The supply of spare parts is not fully guaranteed by German Mitsubishi workshops and is mostly produced by equivalent replacement parts from the Mitsubishi Galant V6 24V.

The top speed is 240km/h (electronically limited) and acceleration from 0 100km/H requires in 7.2 s

Mid-2005, the D50 series has been discontinued.

The latest generation was presented at the Detroit Auto Show in early 2005 to the public for the first time.

This series, there were three versions: Eclipse GS/GS Spyder Eclipse, Eclipse GT/GT Spyder Eclipse and Eclipse SE.

In autumn 2008 the revised model was released. In addition to other exterior colors for the entire series there was for the GT version, a new body kit with large rear wing and a twin-pipe exhaust system.

At the end of 2012, production of the Eclipse was terminated without successors.
