Maserati Quattroporte V
The Maserati Quattroporte is a four-door sedan of the Italian car manufacturer Maserati.
In addition to sports cars and GTs Maserati looks back on a decade-long tradition of the four-door sports sedans. It all began in 1963 with the first Quattroporte, the recipe of the great Maserati has since been straightforward: A luxury sports car with room for four people.
The Maserati Quattroporte I put the best products from other manufacturers, including the high-performance sedans from Mercedes and Jaguar, in terms of engine performance, dynamics, agility and partly also the (chassis) technology in the shade. He had an inherited from the sports cars of the brand V8 engine from 4200cc 191 kW made (260hp). Later came a variant with 4700cc and a power output of 212 kW (290hp) to do so. With a Top speed of 220km/h the Quattroporte in the sixties, one of the fastest production sedans in the world. After the series ended production Pietro Frua put two, possibly three-door special models ago, which were commonly known as "Quattroporte Aga Khan" known and should be an ultimately not produced in series proposal for a second version of the Quattroporte.
Until 1970 776 units were built.
In the fall of 1974, the Quattroporte II was introduced at the Paris Motor Show just before Citroën Maserati sold to De Tomaso. He is technically closely related to the Citroën SM. Like him, he has a 2965cc big V6 engine with an output of 190hp (140 kW), also had the car front wheel drive, an unusual solution for Maserati. The design of the car came from Bertone. When driving performance were a top speed of 200km/h and an acceleration from 0 to 100km/h given in 10 s.
Another presentation of the car took place at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1975. Now, the car was equipped with a 3.2-liter version of the six-cylinder engine that should deliver 200hp.
Altogether in the Citroën era six pre-production vehicles of the Quattroporte II emerged after the takeover by De Tomaso was built from existing items, seven other cars. Most of these vehicles were sold in pieces to Spain to avoid the necessary in most other European countries, expensive approval process; others went to South America or in Arab countries.
After the failure of the Quattroporte II of the new owner De Tomaso made quickly for a model that could succeed the Quattroporte I. De Tomaso wanted the one hand, place the Citroën heritage as quickly as possible; the other hand, he saw the potential for a fast, stylish Italian sedan. As with the model Maserati Kyalami he grabbed therefore in the development of a successor to substances found his own company back: As technical basis for the suspension of the De Tomaso Deauville sedan was based on, which was only slightly changed. Motor side, was until 1981 a 4.2 liter eight-cylinder engine in the range, which delivered 255hp and a top speed of 220km/h was good. Alternatively, there was the 4.9-liter eight-cylinder with 280hp and later 300hp, which was enough for 230km/h. When transmission was a manual five-speed transmission from ZF Friedrichshafen or a Torque-Flite three-speed automatic for Chrysler; latter was ordered by almost 85% of all customers. The design of the body had nothing to do with the Deauville; it was independent and came from Giorgio Giugiaro.
The prototype of the Quattroporte III was presented at the Turin Motor Show in November 1976. It took nearly three more years until the series production began. Between 1979 and 1986 originated about 2100 copies. From 1986 there was a new edition, which was called "Royale". Apart from a modified interior and increased power to 300hp, the car was not different from its predecessor. Between 1986 and 1990, were again 53 copies the Royale made. The Quattroporte III Royale and was one of the most successful cars by Maserati.
With the twin-turbo series also smaller four-door Maserati models came in the course of the 1980s on the market, the 425 and the 430 are well known. Although not designed as a true successor to the Quattroporte, they were from 1990 to 1993, the only four-door models of the company.
First unveiled in the March 1994 Quattroporte IV was wearing the traditional name, where it is technically and visually strong leaning to the Ghibli and the 430 4v. Initially, there was only him with V6 engines with a displacement of 2000cc and 2800 (287 and 284hp), since 1996, also with the V8 engine of the Maserati Shamal. This had a displacement of 3200 cm ³ and made 335hp (246 kW). After 1997 Ferrari owners had become Maseratis in the spring, the production of the Quattroporte IV was first exposed to make changes in production. At the same time the car has been revised in many details. In press releases Maserati spoke of over 400 changes to the Quattroporte, which were introduced in the resumption of production in the spring of 1998. The produced from 1998 models carried the additional Evoluzione. Overall, the Quattroporte IV was produced until May 2001 in 2400 copies, of which 758 vehicles were equipped with the eight-cylinder engine.
At the International Motor Show in September 2003, a new, well-designed by Pininfarina Quattroporte was introduced (Type M139) With his early grille, he quotes a style element of the first generation.; However, the profile and the design of the C-pillar was intended as a reminiscence of Giugiaro Iso Fidia, a competitor of the Quattroporte I.
The Quattroporte V has the same engine as the Maserati Coupe, here, however, with 294 kW (400hp). Initially, only has an automatic (sequential) gearbox called "DuoSelect" is used, which located at the rear axle (transaxle design) and was designed to be very athletic, but was felt in the large sedan by many customers as too uncomfortable. Since January 2007 the car as the Maserati Quattroporte Automatica is also a 6-speed ZF automatic transmission converter available that was directly attached to the engine.
At the IAA in September 2005 two more Quattroporte were presented, the Executive GT and Sport GT. These versions are equipment packages that will enhance the character of the car on the one hand towards luxury (Executive GT), on the other hand towards sportiness (GT Sport).
The Maserati Quattroporte is also used by the Italian government as a company car. Thus, the president and the head of government drive an armored by the Carrozzeria Pavesi version of this model.
