The Fiat Panda is a city car produced by Italian automaker Fiat since 1980. There are three different generations, and all have transverse front engine. Was the first urban car available AWD, the first to mount diesel, natural gas and LPG engines. In 1990 he became one of the first modern automobile great series to feature an electric version. In over thirty years of existence has joined worldwide sales of more than 6.5 million units, of which nearly half a million was available AWD.

1980-2003

The first generation of the Panda is a three-door hatchback designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro to fill the gap in the range of the Fiat 126, also from segment A, and the Fiat 127, the segment B. It was designed as a low cost car ( so shared components with both models), being created in order to be a car as functional as possible; in fact, when designing the interior of the Fiat Panda, Giugiaro was inspired by observing the inside a combat helicopter.

The Panda should be an economical, practical and robust model; and yet, had to have a performance high enough, that would allow a nimble road because their use was not confined exclusively to the traffic of big cities. So all your glazing was achieved based flat moons, your wipers had only one arm, and its interiors were designed with functionality as the main objective; the seats and the lower part of the dashboard were made of a base metal tubing and covered in the same genre, even being able to mount these tapestries to wash in a domestic washing machine. Also could easily be converted inside the Panda into a bed for occasional use or in a small van with various applications.

Its engine at launch was a two-cylinder gasoline engine and 650cc of air-cooled. Later other four-cylinder petrol engines were added, all less than 1.1 liter engine and a 1.3-liter diesel. In addition to front-wheel drive, the Panda 4×4 was the first car with a transverse engine front wheel drive and all four wheels at the same time and the first car under four meters to introduce a diesel engine (1986) to offer the AWD (1983).

The one millionth Panda was made in July 1984 to two million in August 1988; was discontinued in May 2003, with 4.5 million units produced. The Spanish manufacturer SEAT model sold under the name SEAT Panda between 1980 and 1986, and the name SEAT Marbella between 1986 and 1998.

Fiat Panda multitude of special editions were made:

The second generation Panda (Project 169), also bridges the gap between a supermini segment A and one B, in this case the Fiat Seicento and Fiat Punto. The Panda was awarded Car of the Year in Europe in 2004, and one million units between May 2003 and September 2007 were made. Like the Panda I, there are versions with front-wheel drive and Four-wheel drive, but a five-door hatchback.

Their engines are all four-cylinder. The gasoline is a 1.1 liter 54hp of maximum power, a 1.2-liter 60hp and a 1.4 liter with sixteen valves and 100hp, while the diesel is a 1.3-liter 70hp (later 75hp) turbocharged, intercooled direct injection with common rail technology.

Since its introduction to the cessation of production in 2011 there were more than two million units, specifically the July 4, 2011 leaving the Fiat plant in Tychy two million unit of Fiat Panda presented in 2003.

The Fiat Panda 4×4 is the SUV version of Panda, which is commonly called wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

During the last years of production, Fiat has continued to make improvements in the model, both in body design and interior and engine, installing the latest technical developments and, more ecological Multijet diesel engines than others previously used in Fiat.

For the exterior, gave greater force to the lines, the headlights are bigger and the front and side fenders widened.

The interior was completely remodeled and like the body color, you can choose between various combinations.

During production, Fiat has been pulling some versions of limited series as the Panda 4×4 Rossignol of which only 200 units were made.

Currently, the Fiat Panda 4×4 has two basic versions: the Panda 4×4 Climbing and Panda 4×4 Cross.

There is also a basic version of the Panda 4×4 which differs from the Panda 4×4 Climbing to be a few inches smaller and have tires 165/70 R14 front 185/65 R14 of Climbing.

The Fiat Panda 4×4 Climbing is a version with exclusive equipment that greatly improves the characteristics of the basic model. It is intended for an audience that enjoys both the countryside and the city.

It comes standard with bumpers the same color as the body, side bolsters, roof rails, trip computer, passenger airbag, central locking and tires 185/65 R14 tires with 15 "adapted for any type of terrain.

As options can include various folding sunroof and navigation systems.

Climate, Landscape and Cult: three versions of the Panda 4×4 Climbing are available.

Motor 1.2

Four-cylinder, 1242cc and 60hp that can reach a top speed of 160km/h.

The 1.2 is provided with a cathode ray converter that reduces emissions to 156 g /km.

Another detail of this engine is its "active knock sensor" to maximize the power produced by the engine saving on consumption.

Motor 1.3 16v

This Multijet diesel engine range, four-cylinder, 1248cc, achieves a maximum output of 70hp at 4,000 rpm and a top speed of 160km/h.

The direct injection system "Common Rail" is one of the most technologically advanced: In a cylinder with a diameter of 65 cm, features four valves, an injector and a spark plug which makes it the smallest engine in its class with a weight 130kg and with a performance very similar to those of a gasoline engine.

As for CO2 emissions, the 1.3 Multijet 16v engine produces emissions of 140 g /km.

The Fiat Panda 4×4 Cross is the highest version of the range. The design has been tweaked bodywork and interior to give it a more sporty look, which has gotten a lot more off-road oriented version and countryside.

The front bumper covers the entire front, and the headlights and taillights are round, unlike the basic rectangular or Climbing series, giving it a more aggressive look.

The side moldings are quite thick, to better protect the sides of the vehicle.

As for the engine, the Panda Cross 4×4 carries a 1.3 16v Multijet and 70hp. The alloy wheels are 15 "and use oversized tires 175/65 that allow you to move with agility on any terrain.

In the interior, it has adopted a fairly complete equipment series:

The Fiat Panda Tanker is a concept car based on the Fiat Panda II. It was built in 2006 and was presented at the Bologna Motor Show in the same year. It was designed by the Fiat Style Centre in conjunction with the Italian manufacturer of clothing and equipment for extreme sports Dainese

The Panda Tanker maintains the basic design of the conventional and generally Panda, with the same dimensions, but has only three gates: the rear have been replaced by solid panels have been removed and the two rear seats to increase the extra storage in the interior, where brackets have been added for fixing sports equipment.

Outside were added aluminum tubular structures designed to carry mountain bikes. The underbody were reinforced protection and traction is integral to all 4 wheels. It is also equipped with sport seats consisting of a rigid body titanium fiber.

The body was painted with a matte gray on the outside and is powered by a 1.3-liter turbodiesel, designed to take part in the model presented in the endurance test engine Dakar Rally.

The Fiat Panda (Project 139) is a third-generation supermini A with a single body of five seats and five doors.

The third generation Panda was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2011. Their marketing was originally scheduled for late 2011. Finally, the Panda began marketing in February 2012. The commercial version was submitted in July 2012. SUV and off-road versions were presented at the Paris Salon of 2012.

It was designed by the Fiat Style Centre maintained the features of Panda marketed since 2003, now with a more compact and robust design. The straight lines of previous generations are rounded motif used repeatedly both outside and inside automobile. At the time of its introduction, it was learned that the Panda will be available in over 600 color combinations, product of combining mechanical, trim levels, the interiors available and the different types of tire. Additionally, there are ten different body colors.

Compared to the previous model dimensions have grown. The new model has dimensions of 3.65 meters long, 1.64 meters wide and 1.55 meters high, so is 11 inches longer, 6 inches wide and 1 inch taller than the previous model. The wheelbase is 5 cm higher compared to the previous model. The doors are high with wide opening angle and large glass area. The third side window was maintained, however the front and rear lights occupy a higher position to increase your visibility and protection from minor knocks.

Inside the base form used design is also the rounded square. To optimize interior space parking brake has been redesigned making it smaller and shifter has remained high and close to the steering wheel position. The dashboard can be chosen in different colors and the front passenger seat folds completely turning it into a side table. The rear seats can be moved longitudinally and 16 cm can have several configurations: a single seat three seater seat a party half (approved for 2 places), or a party seat ratio 3/2. The boot capacity is increased by 10 liters compared to the previous generation, has a completely flat load space, to match the height of the load floor with the seatbacks folded once, and its capacity is 238 liters of volume with the seats arranged in their rearmost setting, and advancing them 260 liters 870 liters with them folded. In addition, 14 are disposed storage compartments among which is a closed glove box and slide a big hole in the dashboard, reinterpreting a solution already adopted on the Panda appeared in 1980.

You can have air conditioning or automatic climate control. Optionally you can have large panoramic roof called SkyDome. The boot has a compartment specific load and puncture repair kit or spare wheel. For refueling, has a system called Smart Fuel in which it dispenses with the traditional fuel cap and has an inhibitor that prevents fuel refueling inaccurate. Certain operating logics can be customized with My Car system

Is available with Blue & Me In certain versions, device designed jointly by Fiat Auto and Microsoft, with the steering wheel controls and voice recognition system can handle the mobile phone via Bluetooth and music player car equipped with USB. You can equip a more advanced version of the system developed in conjunction with TomTom called Blue & Me TomTom Live, similar to that presented in Lancia Ypsilon (2011). It consists of an in-dash, touch-screen portable device that provides functions of GPS navigator with real-time updates on traffic conditions. As an option there is a Hi-Fi system with CD/MP3 player.

The entire range has standard daytime running lights with LED lights, warning about the use of safety belts on all seats, ABS system help with emergency braking and electronic brake distribution. Optionally you equipe stability control, traction control, Hill Holder system Prefill and help hill start is possible.

Given its largely urban use, an optional automatic braking system is available at low speed called City Brake Control, using a laser sensor on the top of the windscreen detects obstacles ahead of the vehicle and certain hazardous conditions automatically applies pressure to the brake circuit.

In late 2011 the Panda received four stars in EuroNCAP tests conducted by, with a total score of thirty points. Other elements of passive safety, the third generation of the Panda série account with front and curtain airbags, head restraints cervical antilatigazo front, ISOFIX child seat and front seat belts with pre-tensioners and load limiters across the range. Optionally can be equipped Front side airbags and height adjustment for the seat belts.

The Panda was the first car to use Fiat Mini platform, a new global modular platform based on the Fiat prototype Ecobasic and that have made major changes. Its drag coefficient is 0.32. Due to the use of high strength steels her body is stiffer, reaching a torsional rigidity of 71,300 N per radian.

The front axle suspension is MacPherson strut and the rear wheel axle spins connected by a torsion bar. As to the second generation, were used stiffer stabilizer bars, susbchasis both axes are more rigidity and now the rear axle is shared by all versions, both front-wheel drive as AWD. The power steering is Dualdrive function type with City, optimized for convenience of use in urban environments. Its turning radius is 9.3 meters.

The Panda sold since its debut with three petrol engines and one diesel, all with emissions below 120 g /km of CO2. has two petrol engines available for the TwinAir and FIRE II family. Both TwinAir has 0.9 liters of displacement, are bicilíndricos and feature MultiAir technology, atmospheric one with a power of 65hp and a supercharged turbo and developing 85hp. The Fire II is aspirated 1.2-liter 69hp. The JTDM diesel is a fuel-injected Multijet II 75hp. All except the FIRE engine feature Star & Stop automatic start and stop withholding system. To help reduce consumption, depending on the version equipped with recommended gear, Eco mode of the engine by pressing a button on the dashboard and EcoDrive system in the presence of Blue & Me and a specific computer software, provides the driver’s eco-driving tips for analyzing your usage statistics engine.

Depending on your country of marketing you can opt for alternative fuel engines such as compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Thus, a 80hp NaturalPower version TwinAir Turbo engine 0.9 liters for use with gasoline or CNG and EasyPower 69hp version of the 1.2-liter Fire engine for use with gasoline or LPG markets.

Initially all versions were front wheel drive but from the second half of 2012 is available in the 4×4 version with high body drive system and four associated mechanical MultiAir and MultiJet 85hp 75hp 4×4 wheels. Since its debut motors are associated with a manual gearbox and then a robotic Dualogic automatic transmission was added for certain engines.

The Fiat Panda 4×4 was presented at the Paris Motor Show 2012, becoming the car with AWD cheaper and the only city car with four-wheel drive. The main difference compared to the Panda 4×4 FWD is the transmission, however the 4×4 version has several distinctive features.

Inside the car, the console is now green tones has an extra glove box and the seats and door panels are upholstered in a mixed fabric with faux leather in green, beige or orange. In addition the console plant is located in a higher position. Externally, the Panda 4×4 features two exclusive color called orange and green Tuscany Sicily.

The body has specific cases for the doors with the version name, aluminum bumper with guards at the bottom of both the front and rear and protecting the lowest in the car, black trim on the steps of wheel and flaps. Because the bumpers and guards, the external dimensions are slightly greater than those of the road model. Measures 3.68 meters long, 1.67 wide and 1.60 high. batallase maintained at 2.30 meters, and the front track and the rear 1.41 1.40 meters. However, the exhaust pipe and the high flush body relative to the ground, 3 centimeters in the path front and 3.5 in the back. This entry angles and outlet 20 and 36 degrees respectively are achieved, where the angles of input, output and larger ventral its class. Maintains independent front suspension and semi-independent rear, though the latter was again designed for the 4×4 version.

The two engines are available. A JTD MultiJet II technology engine that develops 75hp and a TwinAir engine with 85hp MultiAir technology, both equipped with turbocharger and Star & Stop. With respect to the road versions, the height of the outlet engine air was high. Both are associated with manual gearbox, five-speed and six the first second. In both cases the boxes are optimized taking into account the type of car use, with a particularly short first ratio.

The new Panda 4×4 version adopts new technical solutions, leaving the viscous coupling between the front and rear differentials seen in the previous generation. The new AWD system called Torque On Demand, is now permanent, with two differential variable distribution of torque between axles, electronically controlled as timely adherence and traffic conditions. To improve the motor system has electronic locking differential, switchable via a button on the dashboard whenever the speed is below 50km/h. The tires are used for road and beyond.

The Fiat Panda Trekking was presented at the Paris Motor Show 2012 together with the 4×4 version. It is designed for use on city and unpaved roads which do not have difficulty. Aesthetically equals model 4×4 except for the protective aluminum absent in Trekkiing version. Mechanically, unlike the 4×4 model, it has front-wheel drive and no traction at all four wheels. If shares with the 4×4 version type suspension, higher above the ground and specific tire height. Traction control, called Traction +, has been set to operate on unpaved roads, with special logic for that environment. You can manually activate speeds below 30km/h by pressing a button on the dashboard, thereby traction control brakes the wheels lose grip and sends more torque to the other wheel on the same axle.

In July 2012 a commercial version of Panda marketed by Fiat Professional announced. Outwardly the Fiat Panda Van is distinguished by having the darkened rear windows and bumpers to optionally have the body color. Inside two versions two and four seats are available. In the two-seater version of the cargo area has a flat floor with double bottom with multiple storage compartments and the total space is 1,200 liters, featuring a cubic meter of load. In version four seater with rear seats folded down provides 1,000 liters of capacity. In both versions a metallic net separates cargo space for passengers. The load capacity is 500kg or 780 optionally reinforced with specific suspensions.

There are four traditional mechanical available for Panda Van. 1.3 JTD Multijet II 75hp and front or all-wheel drive, FIRE Engine 1.2 69hp and front-or 0.9 TwinAir Turbo 85hp and AWD There are also two versions driven by alternative fuels: FIRE Engine 1.2 69hp EasyPower driven by petrol or LPG and 0.9 TwinAir Turbo Engine 80hp NaturalPower driven by gasoline or CNG.

Since the launch of the third generation, there is speculation about a possible future development of Panda by Abarth, as happened with the second generation.

To mark the start of production of the Panda in Italy after years being manufactured abroad, Fiat showed the country a television advertisement strong emotional impact that appealed to national pride. Under the slogan "we want the Italy" ( in Italian: "L’Italia che ci piace"), in its 90 seconds duration tries to awaken the patriotic instinct of the country Repeats to some extent the formula used for its Chrysler subsidiary starring in the ad. Eminem for Superbowl 2011 and called "made in Detroit". The ad was shot in the same plant that produced the Panda, and in nearby towns. was dispensed professional actors and Instead the workers themselves Factory who star in the film. was put on the air on January 22, 2012 and was created by the agency Kube Libre and directed by Luciano Nardi, with music by Flavio Ibba.

In Italy the firm, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education launched a project in different universities car sharing called "Fiat Likes U" to encourage sustainable mobility. Students from the universities of Turin, Rome, Milan, Salerno, Parma, Cosenza, Pisa and Catania could share several units of the Fiat Panda Fiat 500L and booking travel through a dedicated website. the same group put in the car place a system of college scholarships among others.

In December 2012, shortly after the presentation of the Panda 4×4 without the first units have been delivered, the model appeared to become a monster truck with huge wheels and tiny size in a viral video recorded in the Italian ski resort of Val D ‘ Aosta. originally posted by an anonymous user, subsequently announced that it was actually a model created by Fiat to own a television ad commissioned agency Leo Burnett. The Panda monster truck wheels have a diameter of 1.50 meters with a width of 50cm and monster truck dimensions are 3.90 m high, 3.80 m long and 2 50 m wide.

The production of the third generation of the Panda production was moved to Italy, unlike the second one was made in the Polish plant of Fiat Tychy near the Ford Ka and Fiat 500. To do so were given two hundred thousand hours of training and an investment of € 800 million was made to adapt the assembly lines of the historic Fiat factory in Pomigliano d’Arco after the cessation of production of the Alfa Romeo 159 and Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon. were initially forecast to reach production of 1,050 units per day, or what is the same, 180 to 190,000 units per year.
