Austin Freeway

The Austin Freeway (also: BMC ADO40) was a car that was manufactured and sold by the Austin Motor Company from 1962 to 1966 only in Australia. He was a six-cylinder version of the Austin Cambridge.

The second generation of the Austin Cambridge, which was introduced in 1959, was substantially larger than the previous model. The car was also manufactured in the Australian branch factory of Austin, but arrived in Australia in a very different competitive situation than in the UK. The competing models were not here Ford Consul and Vauxhall Victor, but the Holden made in Australia and adopted from America models Ford Falcon and Chrysler Valiant. This possessed all have six-cylinder engines, with those of Cambridge could not keep up. Although there were a greater Austin model, the Westminster, but was been designed as a European luxury car and thus far too expensive.

In order to compete better with the competition, the Australian BMC office in-house developed, therefore, a six cylinder engine. For cost reasons, a complete redesign banned, the Cambridge engine has been extended to two cylinder, single cylinder with the same dimensions. ³ were from a displacement of 1622 cm so 2433cc and a power of 80 moderatehp (59 kW).

The new car was introduced in the spring of 1962. There were three models: the Austin Freeway with normal equipment as four-door saloon and five-door estate, and – only as a sedan – a luxury version, the 80 was offered as a Wolseley 24 /.

Sales of the Austin Freeway was disappointing, as the competition was very strong and the body of the Austin Cambridge seemed increasingly outdated. Also showed that the Wolseley was much more successful than the Austin-models as it could provide a level of equipment, which until then was not common in Australia.

In the fall of 1964, the cars were redesigned and from now on as Mark 2 (also: BMC YDO3) refers. The engine power increased to 84hp (62 kW). As sales but did not improve, the production in the fall of 1965 was terminated. Unsold stocks were available until well into the year 1966 into it.
