The development of the aircraft began in 2003 with a study on behalf of the Japanese Economy and Industry Ministry for a 30-seat regional jet. The official launch of the program in the meantime increased to 70 to 90 seats draft took place on 28 March 2008 following an order by All Nippon Airways. The construction of the first aircraft began on September 30, 2010 with the production of the horizontal stabilizer. The Mitsubishi Regional Jet is the first airplane for which the geared turbofan Pratt & Whitney PW1000G was selected. The wing boxes do not relate to the original planning of composite materials, but aluminum alloys. The cockpit is equipped with Pro Line Fusion system from Rockwell Collins with four 36 × 28 cm large screens. The control of the aircraft is carried out by a fly-by-wire system.
A version for 70 to 80 passengers, is described as MRJ70 in which MRJ90 should find place overall 86-96 passengers.
