Toyota A1
The Toyoda A1 from 1935 was the first prototype of a passenger car, the built the company to Toyota in 1937. He was then revised and made the first production car in the brand under the name Toyoda AA (sedan), and Toyoda AB (Phaeton). In 1937 the renaming of the company, brand and models, Toyota. Later, the models AA and AB were replaced by similarly shaped types AE, AC and BA.
The entire series was replaced by the constructed quite differently and advanced SA.
Three A1 prototypes were finished in May 1935. However, none of them survived to the present day. They were ordained in a Buddhist ceremony and Kiichiro Toyoda then drove one of them to his father’s grave (who had given him the money to start his first automobile factory).
After the prototypes were finished, Toyoda put his attention to the truck model G1, because it promised profits in less time. After the G1 was ready for serial production, the company could spare money to develop the cars AA and AB.
The A1 had a six-cylinder engine with 3389cc and a three-speed transmission with column shift. Chassis and Electrical were taken over by Ford. The two rigid axles were (very fashionable at the time) equipped with disc wheels and drum brakes. Mechanically the types A1, AA, AB and G1 corresponded to the greatest possible extent.
The A1 had a closed sedan body with four doors; the front two were chipped front, the rear two back. In style, this body corresponded substantially to the Chrysler Airflow. Toyoda had a year before bought such a vehicle and had let it apart completely. The flat windscreen was perfect and had a single windscreen wiper, which was mounted on the driver’s side above. Per page, there were three windows, one in the front door (not triangular window), a rear in the door, and a third in the C-pillar. On the vertical trunk lid the spare tire was mounted.
The A1 was only available as RHD model.
The AA differed only slightly from the A1.
From 1936 to 1943 caused 1,404 AA sedans, then the model was replaced by the more advanced AC. In addition, 353 AB Phaetons were built (including the military version ABR) until 1942. For this model, there was no direct successor.
Like its predecessor, A1 also corresponded to the AA optically largely the Chrysler Airflow. He had a full steel body, which was mounted on a lead frame made of steel. Even windshield and doors were similar to those of its predecessor. The AB was the four-door Phaeton version of the AA and suited him down to the folding fabric roof and the front hinged rear doors. The windshield was folded to the front of the hood. The mechanics of both models corresponded to that of the prototype.
Toyota wanted to use a Toyota AA for the 50-year celebration in 1987, but found no surviving copy more. Therefore, it was decided to build a replica, but also ensures there was no complete plans. The still aufzutreibenden plans came from different stages of development of the vehicle, were often incomplete and did not meet today’s standards character. Nevertheless created a single vehicle, which is believed that it represents the AA well. This Replica is now at the Toyota Motor Museum.
In 2010, appeared on a Russian website on a car ad from Vladivostok, which posted the car mistakenly as 1943er Chevrolet. About a Russian middleman it was finally purchased by the Museum Director of the Louwman Museum, today it is part of the Dutch Louwman Collection. The authenticity of this specimen was confirmed by the Toyota Motor Corporation.
The AC differed from AA just by making small changes to the body. The windscreen was now divided vertically down the middle by a wide metal bridge. The construction of the model began in 1938. From 1943 until its replacement by the SA 1947/1948 created 115 copies, of which 43 pieces in 1943, 19 pieces until February 1944, 50 pieces of spare parts for the army in 1947 and 1948 again 3 pieces. 1945/1946 no cars were produced at Toyota; though was the successor SA at that time already in development. The mechanical equipment of the AC equivalent of the types AA and AB.
Kiichiro Toyoda designed the EA Toyota in 1938 as a copy of the DKW F7, but the car was due to the war no longer made.
A small two-cylinder two-stroke engine of the type E Toyota drove the front wheels.
The Toyota EB was constructed in 1938 a small car with rear wheel drive, but was also due to the war not made in series. Was powered by the same two-stroke engine such as the EA.
The Model AE was smaller than its predecessor. It was developed in 1939 and in September of the same year a prototype was ready. Beginning of 1940 the model was introduced and manufactured from 1941 to 1943 in series. Only 76 units were built. The mechanical components corresponded to those of AA, but the engine type C was shortened to two cylinder type A..
The BA was a simplified sedan, the chassis of which consisted partially of wood in order to save steel. It is said that this 1940 model presented was based on the Volvo PV60, but this information is doubtful, since the Volvo was introduced only in 1944 and only made from 1946 series. Most prototypes of the Volvo PV60 emerged but in the years 1942-1944. There is some information about a Volvo prototype in 1939, but only incomplete data and no pictures.
The BA was introduced in 1940 and produced in series. It emerged only 17 specimens. Some sources claim but that would have been made, this model only in 1943 in series, with a date in June 1943 indicates. If, however, the production figures from 1943 considered, which mainly concern the model AC, it is inconceivable that should have been made every 17 copies of the BA in this one year. Rather, production is expected in 1940 and in 1943 have taken place or have to extend over the entire period 1940 to 1943 with only a few actually in 1943, the "official" in the year of mass production, have been built. At least one copy, however, is obviously actually emerged in 1943, as it is on a photo to see (owned by the Toyota Motor Co. Ltd..) And in the caption as "1943 Toyota Model BA 4-cylinder saloon", which in at least one source mentioned is.
A copy of the Phaeton model Toyota BB was built in 1941. It looked similar to a contemporary Chevrolet.
Two or three copies of the "Model B" (or "BC model" ), a luxury sedan, were also prepared. One source mentions the year 1942 as year of production, the others enter the year 1944 . Anyway, this was the last car, which was built by Toyota until the war ended.
