• Audi S4 (1991 to 1994)

The S4 is the sports version of the Audi A4. An even sportier variant is the RS4.

The predecessor of the S4 was the sports version of the Audi 80, was called Audi S2 and is made available as a coupe, sedan and Avant.

However, the first S4 was the sports version of the Audi 100 C4. From the conversion of the model names on Audi A x 1994 Sport versions of the A4 then were called according to Audi S x.

The sports version of the Audi 100 C4 was named auxiliary S4 until 1994. Then the Audi 100 was revised and renamed the A6 and the Audi 100 S4 was the Audi S6. The car was offered both as a sedan and station wagon (Avant). There were two engine options, a 2.2-liter in-line five-cylinder turbo engine with 169 kW (230hp) and a 4.2-liter V8 with 206 kW (280hp).

The S4 B5 platform has a 2.7-liter V6 twin-turbo engine with 195 kW (265hp) at 5800 min-1 and a max. Torque of 400 Nm 1850-3600 min-1. From 0 100km/h it takes 5.6 seconds (Avant 5.7 seconds). The propulsion ends at an electronically limited 250km/h The power is transmitted through Audi’s all-wheel drive (quattro) on the road. It is shifted with a six-speed manual transmission. An automatic transmission (Tiptronic in conjunction with Steering wheel gearshift as well as in conjunction with a performance throttling to 184 kW/250hp) was available exclusively for the foreign market. The B5 S4 was available as a sedan or station wagon (Avant) available.

The hallmark of the S models are the logos on the grille or rear, the modified bumpers and door mirror housings made of aluminum. The latter, however, were built towards the end of the B5 series.

The S4 was given as the A4 (B5) in early 1999 a facelift. Here, the S4 was given one-piece clear-glass headlamps (Xenon, previously special, the S4 reserved two-piece xenon clear-glass headlights), a new rear bumper and a slightly modified front bumper (oval instead of round fog lights). Further modifications are identical to those of A4.

In early 2003, the new S4 was introduced on the B6 platform. The 4.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine based on the engine of the Audi S8 (D2) and makes the S4 253 kW (344hp). Compared with the base engine, it was reduced by 52 mm in order to accommodate him in the engine room of the midsize sedan. The camshafts are driven by a chain drive instead of a timing belt and the camshaft drive redesigned on the clutch side chain drive at the moment.

Externally, the vehicle differs, inter alia, by modified front and rear bumpers, exterior mirrors in aluminum look, protruding door bumpers, S4 emblems and larger exhaust pipes from the normal A4 variants. Factory of these S4 rolls on 18-inch wheels and tires in size 235/40 ZR 18 on a 20 millimeters a lowered suspension on the road.

Inside, the door sills with S4 logo and the revised instrument cluster with white hands and standard sports seats and Xenon headlights pick up the S4 from the crowd.

The car in the version with six-speed manual transmission accelerates according to factory specification in 5.6 seconds (Avant: 5.8 s; Cabriolet: 5.9 s) from 0 to 100km/h The automatic variants need for longer between 0.2 and 0.3 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h

Like its predecessor, the vehicle is equipped with Torsen four-wheel drive fitted between front and rear wheels (quattro) with symmetrical basic torque split (50:50). It is shifted with a fully synchronized six-speed manual or using an optional six-speed automatic (Tiptronic), which can be connected either via rocker switches on the steering wheel.

Since the B6 S4 next generation of the sedan and the wagon is also available as a convertible.

The S4 (B7) was introduced in late 2004 facelift for the Audi A4 B6 sedan and Avant. In early 2006, appeared the Cabriolet, which is why the construction of B6 and B7 also overlap.

Compared to B6, the design and chassis components have been revised. The engine delivers 253 kW as in the predecessor (344hp) and is offered as standard with six-speed manual transmission. An optional automatic is available.
