To relax the trade barriers between the United States and the Empire of Japan, the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota decided to import the Chevrolet Cavalier and under its own brand name as a Toyota Cavalier (Japanese: トヨタ · キャバリエ) to drive.

The first Cavaliers were imported to Japan in January 1996. Toyota had then, consequently, the U.S. vehicles converted appropriately for the home market.
