• Dodge Sprinter

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter – a family of heavy duty vehicles and light trucks with a GVW up to 5 tons manufactured since 1995.

It is the first commercial vehicle Mercedes-Benz, which received its own name, as opposed to its predecessor T1, bearing only the traditional numerals, meaning (roughly) the total weight (Rounding down, eg 3.5 – ton as 3XX D ) and motor power in HP. Prime Minister and the implementation of the European and global market occurred in 1995 simultaneously with the vocation to life Mercedes-Benz Vans, separate units organizational concern, engaged in the production of commercial vehicles.

Sprinter in 1995, stood out the silhouette of a classic car delivery, which became popular especially after the introduction in 1985 Ford Transit with a streamlined front part, which is completely the engine – aging in the early nineties, thereby losing its market position Mercedes T1-Benz engine was partly in the cab, resulting in noise, and the front consisted of short angular masks, providing limited access to the engine and, together with the entire front surface, increased fuel consumption.

Since the beginning of the model offer included three wheelbases, two roof heights in vans, two lengths chassis cabs (double housed seven people) and station wagon versions for up to 9 people with a driver. The same as the size of body versions have a Volkswagen LT.

Available glazed boxes were used for building buses, coming 13, 16 or 19 people. The dashboard had a digital odometer at the bottom of the speedometer. On his right side there is an analog clock; surcharge mounted in its place a smaller tachometer with integrated clock. Already provides manual air conditioning, as well as an airbag for the driver.

In 1995 there was also a motorhome Sprinter James Cook, having a toilet, a large kitchen and 4 beds. The year 1998 brought the 4X4 version, however, only available for models from 3,5 t, also known as James Cook. Sprinter 1st generation driven one of two diesel engines. The first, naturally aspirated, still based on the design, introduced in 1989 in a model of T1 and achieved 78hp from 2.3 liters capacity Known for the E-Class and G-Class 2.9 – liter turbo diesel was controlled in two capacities: 102 and 122hp; weaker version introduced in 1996. Behind them was available as 2.3-liter petrol engine with a power of 143hp. Each of the units was also available with an automatic gearbox. All wheels are equipped with disc brakes. In many markets, standard ABS and ASR was.

Sprinter sold in 5 versions, varying in terms of capacity. Internal designation W901 series is the version with a total weight 2,59 t, W902 – 2.8 t, W903 – 3.5 tons, and W904 – 4.6 tons of twin tires of the rear axle, available only for the two larger wheelbases. In turn, the longest cars could not be permissible total weight of 2.59 or 2.8 t 3.5-tonne Sprinter can be ordered in about permissible total weight reduced to 3.2 t (also with the longest wheelbase) and increased to 3880kg. The latter often used the company, the bodybuilder buses over 16 seats.

Vehicle width without mirrors are 1933 mm, height 2365 mm No-load (2590 mm high with a roof), interior height 1630 mm cargo (1860 mm).

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter won the Van of the Year 1995.

Introduced at the beginning of 2000, changes in the appearance related primarily to the front of the: sign star "Cutting across" in the mask, new headlights with smooth glass, turbocharger air inlet openings around the right side turn signal. In the cabin, it was important to move the gear lever on the center console, as well as a redesign of the dashboard. In the list of options appeared airbag for the passenger, later well pillows Window (Windowbag), or curtain airbags (available from March 2001). The new dashboard was already a serial tachometer and digital clock.

The most important changes concern, however engines. Remained unchanged only the individual station. Diesels used in previous models were withdrawn, and their place was taken by CDI engines, installed since 1998 in passenger Mercedes cars. Used to today 4-cylinder engine with a capacity of 2148 cm ³ performed in three power versions: 82, 109 and 129hp. Engine 5-cylinder 2.7 CDI developed 156hp, was also the significant torque of 330 Nm. Through Assyst arrangement, evaluating the quality of the oil, runs miÄ™dzyobsÅ‚ugowe reached 40 000km. The new gearbox Sprintshift, in contrast to most automatic construction, caused a reduction in fuel consumption and was also available in versions 4X4. Beyond it was still available classic "automaton".

In 2001, appeared in 6 – ton Sprinter (actual GVW 5990kg) codenamed W905, available only with medium or long wheelbase as chassis cab, a double cab. Performed only with the most powerful engine (the 616 CDI). Let mainly on creating platforms roadside assistance, able to transport almost 3 – ton vehicles, dump trucks with greater capacity than the model GVW 4600kg, and cabinetry special version 4X4 also for the military. He was also ordered in 5 – ton (with reduced capacity, but not bearing the markings 516 CDI). In the same year, you could buy the Sprinter in the U.S. market under the brand Freightliner; later (in 2003) also appeared Dodge Sprinter.

The diameter of the cylinder CDI engines is 88 mm and stroke of 88.4 mm; 2.7 CDI engine was made by adding one of the cylinder.

The most notable change introduced in late 2002, is the engine cover round holes and the frame in body color. Besides using transparent lenses rear lamp indicator. The year 2003 brought the share option ESP system, presented in the commercial vehicle already at the IAA 2002, whose effectiveness was limited only to calibrate to a certain weight, wheelbase and roof height of the vehicle in which he was mounted. Sprinter remained, however, the first in a van, in which the system must ™ appeared (in the same year, it introduced a new standard for the Vito).

At the Salon of Hanover IAA Commercial Vehicles 2004 Sprinter hybrid presented in two versions. Model 311 CDI has an automatic transmission and 109-hp diesel engine completed a 70kW electric power. Additional weight components of this version of NiMH batteries was 350kg; in the case of the use of lithium-ion batteries 160kg. Version without the possibility of charging the battery from the outside had a 30-kilowatt electric motor; additional mass of the system was only 100kg, but declined to reach max. 4km. Hybrid Sprinter diesel went to Kansas City, version station was allocated to market California, where limited use of diesels.

In total, produced more than 1.3 million first-generation Sprinter plants in Düsseldorf, González Catan (in the Greater Buenos Aires), as well as assembly plants in China (Fuzhou), and Vietnam – Ho Chi Minh City.

Przedseria second generation Sprinter was manufactured back in 2005 and shown at the Amsterdam RAI exhibition, along with its twin Volkswagen Crafter. Already shown that the new model will include the DMC from 3 to 5 tons and beyond will be reduced version GVW of 4.6 t tires, single rear axle Super Single, which facilitates pallet load through the back door to the van, and plan of the building of the bus – all thanks to 1300 mm wide between the rear wheel arches. This is not the only advantage of this solution (others include less weight and rolling resistance), so 4600kg GVW and a single rear axle tires may also have rigids (and with factory pickup bed).

The new Sprinter has grown in every dimension; the current base model significantly exceeds 5 m in length, but no thanks to 7.5 m³ load volume. For vans and chassis with three body lengths (based, however, to a greater wheelbase) was fourth, extended rear overhang version of the largest wheelbase, reaching up to 17 m³ cargo volume (using a super high roof laminate – another important novelty) and 4700 mm the length of the hold. An identical range of body features twin VW Crafter anyway. In serial equipment were previously option positions of active safety: ESP with ABS, ASR, MSR, BAS and EBD, airbag for the driver. New adaptive ESP, calculates the center of gravity of the vehicle, which unlike passenger cars subject to frequent movements. As an option still available head curtain airbags and side airbags (the latter only in 2 separate the front seats). The battery of the new Sprinter is located in the floor under the driver’s legs, which are not exposed to crushing at the time of the accident, ensuring the supply of power to the airbags and central locking for example, unlocking the door after the accident.

Among other items is available upon request MSS system, engine off after 3 seconds, stop, accessible only to vehicles with a manual transmission, because restarting the engine is in it when the clutch pedal is pressed or when the vehicle begins to roll – here it is necessary to ensure the engine running activities assisted braking and steering. Four-wheel drive is also available with a reducer field and similarly as before> it is not possible to access ™’s most abszego diesel and petrol.

In the new model, it was decided to replace the 82 – hp engine 2.2 CDI 88 – hp (marking 209 CDI, 309 CDI, 409 CDI and 509 CDI) mounted earlier in the Vito. With a smaller supply Mercedes also comes another important novelty – 150 hp 2.2 CDI (marking 215 CDI, 315 CDI, 415 CDI and 515 CDI, since 2009, 216 CDI, 316 CDI, 416 CDI and 516 CDI), acting as the optimal unit under terms of fuel consumption, weight (affecting a larger load capacity) and power. The most powerful diesel engine is the 3.0 V6 CDI with 184hp and a torque of 400 Nm, available in a range of speeds from 1600 to 2600 rev/min. However, in reality most powerful motor is 3.5 – liter V6, as used in the models are marked as 224, 324, 424 and 524; its power is, however, more than 240hp: 258hp exactly is available at a speed equal to 5900 rev/min.

December 23, 2010 The Russian company GAZ signed a licensing agreement for the production of the successor series GAZ Gazelle. Ma based on the Sprinter and be produced from 2011.

Vehicle width without mirrors is 1993 mm, height 2435 mm No Load (2,725 mm with roof high, super-high 3050), height 1650 mm inside the cargo hold (1940 mm resp. 2,140 mm).

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is produced jointly with Volkswagen Crafter in the German factories in Düsseldorf (van, truck) and Ludwigsfelde (vans, chassis cab). The level of production of the Sprinter is about 150 thousand. units per year.

In 2009 we introduced a new entities. The current units are marked 2.2 CDI OM 651 DE22LA and have a displacement of less only 6 cm ³, but are heavier by 12kg, mainly due to the additional rollers and drive. Power strongest engine increased to 163hp, the role of the old engines 88 – and 109-horse took a new 95hp. In parallel, increased by 4hp three-liter turbo diesel power V6, but without major modifications in the structure. Introduced new engines meet the emission standard Euro 5, are equipped as standard with a particulate filter and without adaptation can burn fuel with 10% bio-component content. The reduction in units of 2.2 liter of turnover, which is achieved at maximum torque, reduced the noise level and fuel consumption. Each Sprinter 316 CDI and 319 CDI can now pull the 3.5-ton trailer with brakes, provided the application reinforced tow bar, GCW has increased, and in fact up to 7000kg.

In 2013, the car undergoes facelift. The car changed the front end and enriched facilities. Changed include front bumper, lower ground clearance and redesigned headlights and grill. The interior was changed seats to seats with thicker upholstery, audio system Becker and updated navigation. Added a system to prevent a collision, the system will compensate for the effect of crosswinds, the system warning point in the blind spot mirrors and lane guidance. Refreshed Sprinter will be available with four-and six-cylinder diesel engines with power ratings from 90hp to 190hp. The first copies will go to showrooms in September. New Sprinters meet emission standards Euro VI.
